Karl joined Cal Poly’s Physics Department in 2004 after completing an undergraduate degree from Dublin City University, a doctorate from University of Oregon and a post-doctoral fellowship at Syracuse University. His research includes modeling complex mesoscopic systems, such as liquid crystals and magnets, and the influence of chirality on their critical behavior near phase transitions.

In his current role as Associate Dean, Karl oversees Bailey College’s facilities, budget and Frost programs. He also manages student enrollment and personnel for the College. Prior to his role as Associate Dean, he served as chair of the Physics Department.
