Nine Departments. Endless Opportunities.
Our academic departments shape each Cal Poly student’s education by supporting learning across science, math and education and preparing graduates for diverse paths forward.
Biological Sciences
Biological Sciences students experience hands-on learning and research in labs and the field alongside expert faculty mentors. Through a range of majors and concentrations, they are prepared for meaningful careers or advanced study in microbiology, biotechnology, pre-medicine, marine science, botany, ecology and conservation.
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Our Chemistry and Biochemistry Department prepares students for careers in science, education, research and industry through a strong foundation in chemical principles and hands-on lab work. Using leading-edge equipment and modern techniques, students learn while exploring pathways in chemistry, biochemistry, polymers and related fields.
Kinesiology and Public Health
Kinesiology and Public Health students learn to improve human health and well-being through movement, prevention, research and education. They explore areas such as exercise science, health promotion, trends in medicine and community wellness in preparation for a variety of careers or advanced studies.
Liberal Studies
Liberal Studies prepares students for careers in K–8 education by providing an interdisciplinary foundation in language arts, mathematics, science, history/social sciences, visual and performing arts, health/physical education, and human development. The program emphasizes broad subject knowledge alongside pathways to teaching credentials.
Mathematics
Mathematics students develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills through coursework in pure and applied mathematics while exploring diverse areas and methodologies. Graduates pursue careers in a wide array of fields such as data science, technology, finance and education, with many continuing on to graduate study.
Physics
Physics students explore fundamental principles of the universe through hands-on experimentation and research. The program offers opportunities to work closely with faculty while preparing for careers, research or advanced studies in science, engineering, astronomy, laser technologies, optics, quantum mechanics and other areas.
School of Education
The School of Education prepares future educators and leaders with master’s-level programs, teaching and administrative credentials, an undergraduate minor and a bilingual authorization — all grounded in equity, inclusion and community engagement. Graduates gain the knowledge to support diverse learners and impact P–20 education in meaningful ways.
Statistics
Statistics students learn to analyze and interpret data to solve real-world problems and power a wide range of collaborative research. With a focus on applied methods, statistical modeling, study design and computational tools, the program prepares students for careers in data science, analytics, industry and graduate studies.
Oceanography and Natural Sciences
The Oceanography and Natural Sciences (OcNS) Department at Cal Poly Maritime Academy empowers students to explore Earth’s systems through an integrated approach to science. The OcNS Department operates out of the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, California.
