Yosemite National Park

Cal Poly researchers resurveyed historic vegetation monitoring plots in Yosemite National Park to understand how its alpine plant communities are responding to climate change.

Mbangombe, Malawi

Over the last decade, more than 100 Cal Poly student researchers and international collaborators guided by physics Professor Pete Schwartz developed ISECooking (Insulated Solar Electric Cooking) as an alternative to biomass burning practices used by more than 3 billion people. Funded by UK Aid, the goal is to develop ISECooker manufacturing capacity in regions where traditional cooking emits smoke, contributes to climate change and 4 million respiratory deaths annually; and is responsible for deforestation and exposing women and children collecting firewood to violence. Schwartz spent 2023 in Africa, India and Nepal building cookers with local collaborators.
